Erasmus Mobility Funding

Erasmus Mobility Funding

The Erasmus programme provides a contribution towards the additional costs of studying abroad, such as travel expenses, language preparation costs, and the general expenses that come with studying abroad.  Erasmus funding is not a full scholarship; its purpose is to alleviate the potential financial pressure you may encounter, so you will need to have additional funds available to participate in an Erasmus exchange or traineeship.

The total amount received as an Erasmus grant is influenced by several factors including: the duration of the Erasmus mobility; the cost of living in the host country; the type of mobility being completed; and additional top up entitlements.

Long-term Studies / Traineeships

The below information is represented as of the 2026/2027 academic year

Long-term studies / traineeships refer to Erasmus mobilities which are at minimum 60 days long. The most common type of mobility in this area would be a semester long / full year study exchange with a partner institution. Traineeships refer to students completing their programmes industry placements at one of our partner institutions, or with a company / research institution within the European Union.

Inclusion Support Funding (ISF)

Students who are receive the SUSI grant are eligible for an additional monthly top up to their Erasmus Grant; alongside their regular SUSI payments.

Eligible students will receive the following monthly top-up in the Erasmus Grant:

  • €250 per month for an Erasmus study exchange
  • €150 per month for an Erasmus traineeship

Travel Support

Included in the total Erasmus grant amount is a one of payment which is intended to cover most, but not all, the costs associated with getting to your host country. This amount is calculated based on the distance you are travelling from MTU (Cork/Tralee) to the city/ town of your host institution.

Travel Distances  Non-Green Travel Support
Between 500 and 1,999km €309 per participant
Between 2,000 and 2,999km €395 per participant
Between 3,000 and 3,999km €580 per participant

As of now, all of MTU’s Erasmus partners fall within the above distance bands. In the rare event that you are completing an Erasmus mobility and travelling outside of these distances, the correct travel support amount will be added to your Erasmus grant.

Monthly Base Amount

The monthly base amount is dependent on:

  1. The type of mobility you are completing
  2. The cost of living in the host country

Short-term Mobilities & Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)

The below information is represented as of the 2026/2027 academic year

Short-term Mobilities refer to Erasmus mobilities which are at maximum of 30 days long. More commonly students will patriciate in a BIP. BIPs are short-term mobilities that last no longer than 14 days. These are often credited programmes which students will take in place of an MTU elective module. Eligibility criteria for each BIP are done at the discretion of the organiser; MTU academic departments have the final say as to whether the credits earned on a BIP can be used as progress towards a student's degree.

Erasmus Grant Amount

Students and recent graduates on short-term physical mobility to any country receive a base amount of 79 EUR per day up to the 14th day of activity. Students also receive a travel allowance which is based on distance. Please see the following table which outlines the different travel distance bands. This amount is calculated based on the distance you are travelling from MTU (Cork/Tralee) to the city/ town of your host institution.

Travel Distances  Non-Green Travel Support
Between 500 and 1,999km €309 per participant
Between 2,000 and 2,999km €395 per participant

As of now, all of MTU’s Erasmus partners fall within the above distance bands. In the rare event that you are completing an Erasmus mobility and travelling outside of these distances, the correct travel support amount will be added to your Erasmus grant.
